Cape Point & Boulders Beach Penguins Day Trip: A Local's Guide

By Private Driver Service Cape Town · Updated 4 October 2026 · Drive times are approximate

If you only do one day trip from Cape Town, make it this one. In a single loop you get the penguins at Boulders Beach, the cliffs and lighthouse at Cape Point, the Cape of Good Hope sign, and some of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world. Here is how to plan it so the day feels easy, not rushed.

Who this day is for

Best time to go

You can do this trip all year. Summer (roughly November to March) brings long days and warm weather, but also the strong south-easter wind, locally called the "Cape Doctor", which can be fierce at Cape Point. Winter (June to August) is greener and quieter, with more rain. Spring (September to November) is a sweet spot: fewer crowds than December, and whales are often visible in False Bay.

Time of day: start early. Tour buses tend to arrive at Boulders and Cape Point from mid-morning, so arriving at the penguins around opening time makes a real difference. Gate hours change by season, so check the official SANParks pages for Boulders and Cape Point before you go.

Sample day itinerary (with approximate drive times)

  1. 07:30 Pick-up in the City Bowl, Sea Point or the V&A Waterfront.
  2. approx. 30 min Drive to Muizenberg for the colourful beach huts, then along the False Bay coast through St James and Kalk Bay.
  3. approx. 25 min On to Simon's Town. Walk the boardwalks at Boulders (Foxy Beach) to see the African penguin colony. Allow about an hour.
  4. approx. 30 min Drive south into the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park. Look out for ostriches, bontebok and eland along the road.
  5. 2 to 3 hours Cape Point: ride the funicular or walk up to the old lighthouse, take the cliff path to the viewpoint over the newer lighthouse, then drive down to the Cape of Good Hope sign. Lunch at the restaurant at Cape Point or a picnic.
  6. approx. 45 min Return up the Atlantic side via Scarborough and Kommetjie.
  7. approx. 40 min Home over Chapman's Peak Drive (if open) and Hout Bay, ideally in the late-afternoon light. Back in town around 17:00.

Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and how long you stop. The loop is roughly 150 km.

Local tips

Why a private driver works well for this day

The Peninsula loop is long, with many short stops and tight parking at Boulders and Kalk Bay in season. With a private driver you skip the parking hunt, stop wherever the view is good, and change the plan on the day if the wind or traffic turns. It also means the person driving Chapman's Peak isn't the person trying to take photos of it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Cape Point and Boulders day trip take?

Plan for a full day, roughly 8 to 9 hours from pick-up to drop-off. The loop is about 150 km, and you will want time at Boulders, Cape Point and a lunch stop.

Can you see the penguins and Cape Point on the same day?

Yes. Boulders Beach in Simon's Town is on the way to Cape Point, so most people visit the penguins in the morning and Cape Point afterwards.

What is the best time of day to see the penguins at Boulders?

Early morning, close to opening time, is usually quietest. The penguins are there all day, but the boardwalks get busy once tour buses arrive.

Do I need to book tickets for Cape Point or Boulders?

There is no need to book a time slot. You pay a conservation fee per person at each gate, by card. Check SANParks for current fees and gate times.

Is Chapman's Peak Drive always open?

No. It can close for rockfall risk, strong wind or heavy rain. Check the official Chapman's Peak Drive updates on the day; the alternative route back is via the M3 or Ou Kaapse Weg.

Opening hours, fees and road status change. Always check the official site of each attraction before you go. This guide is written by a local private driver service; we are not affiliated with any of the attractions mentioned.
