Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is about 20 km east of the city centre. On a good run you are at your hotel in under half an hour; at rush hour the same trip can take twice as long. Here is what to expect from CPT to the places most visitors stay, and how to choose between a shuttle, a ride-hailing app and a private transfer.
Who this guide is for
- First-time visitors landing after a long-haul flight who want the first hour to be simple.
- Families with luggage, car seats and tired children.
- Travellers heading straight to the Winelands, Hermanus or the Atlantic Seaboard.
- Late-night and early-morning flights, when you want a confirmed pick-up rather than hoping for a car.
Approximate drive times from CPT
| Destination | Off-peak | Peak traffic |
|---|---|---|
| City Bowl / CBD | approx. 20 to 25 min | approx. 45 min+ |
| V&A Waterfront / Green Point | approx. 25 min | approx. 50 min+ |
| Sea Point | approx. 30 min | approx. 55 min+ |
| Camps Bay / Clifton | approx. 35 min | approx. 60 min+ |
| Stellenbosch | approx. 30 to 40 min | approx. 50 min+ |
| Franschhoek | approx. 60 min | approx. 75 min+ |
| Hermanus | approx. 90 min | approx. 2 hours |
Times are approximate. Weekday peaks are usually around 07:00 to 09:00 into the city and 16:00 to 18:30 out of it on the N2. Allow extra time on Friday afternoons.
Your options compared
- Ride-hailing apps (such as Uber and Bolt) work at CPT from marked pick-up areas. Good for light travellers; less ideal with lots of luggage, car seats or a group.
- MyCiTi airport bus: the city's bus service runs between the airport and the city centre. It is budget-friendly, but you still need to get from the bus stop to your hotel. Check the MyCiTi website for the current route and times.
- Shared shuttles drop several passengers at different hotels, so your trip can take longer.
- Private transfer: one car, booked in advance, waiting for your flight, going straight to your door. The best fit for families, groups, late arrivals and anyone heading out of town.
Sample arrival day (with approximate times)
- Landing Clear passport control, collect bags. International arrivals can take 30 to 60 minutes from landing to the arrivals hall at busy times.
- Arrivals hall Meet your driver at the agreed meeting point. Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport if you need one.
- approx. 25 to 35 min Drive into town on the N2. On a clear day, Table Mountain comes into view ahead of you.
- Optional If you land in the morning and can't check in yet, a short scenic detour via Signal Hill or the Atlantic Seaboard is a gentle first look at the city.
- Or Head straight to the Winelands: Stellenbosch is closer to the airport than the city is, so a wine lunch on arrival day is realistic.
What to book ahead
- Your transfer, with your flight number, so the pick-up time can follow delays.
- Your accommodation's check-in time. Many long-haul flights land early; ask about early check-in or luggage storage.
- Child seats if you are travelling with young children. Confirm them when you book.
- Your departure transfer. For international flights, aim to be at CPT about three hours before departure, and leave extra time at rush hour.
Local tips
- Use only official or pre-booked transport. Politely ignore anyone offering a ride inside the terminal.
- Share your flight number, not just the time. A good transfer tracks the flight.
- Keep valuables out of sight in the car and at traffic lights, as you would in any big city.
- Load-shedding and traffic lights: when power is cut, some traffic lights go out and act as four-way stops, which slows traffic. Allow a little extra time.
- Going to Camps Bay? The route usually goes over Kloof Nek, with great views of the Twelve Apostles on the way down.
