A Cape Point day trip is the one most visitors remember: two coastlines, one of the world's great cliff roads, a lighthouse at the tip of the Peninsula and a colony of penguins on a town beach. Here is a simple one-day itinerary that does the full loop at an easy pace, with a private driver doing the driving.
The route at a glance
The classic loop leaves Cape Town along the Atlantic coast, crosses to the tip of the Peninsula and comes back along False Bay:
- Camps Bay and Hout Bay: beaches, mountains and a working harbour.
- Chapman's Peak Drive: the famous cliff road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek.
- Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope: the lighthouse, the cliffs and the famous sign.
- Boulders Beach and Simon's Town: the African penguin colony and a historic naval town.
- Kalk Bay and Muizenberg: a fishing harbour, small shops and the colourful beach huts.
Doing it in this direction means the Atlantic side gets the softer morning light and you reach the penguins in the afternoon. Your driver can reverse it on the day if the wind or a road closure makes the other way better.
Sample itinerary (times are approximate)
- 08:00 Pick-up from your hotel or guesthouse in the City Bowl, Sea Point, Green Point or the V&A Waterfront.
- 08:30 Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles. A short photo stop with the mountains behind the beach.
- 09:00 Hout Bay harbour. Coffee and a walk along the harbour. Boat trips to see the seals on Duiker Island leave from here, if you'd like to add one.
- 10:00 Chapman's Peak Drive. The road is cut into the cliffs above the Atlantic, with pull-offs for photos. It is a toll road and it closes in bad weather or for rockfall risk, so we check its status on the morning.
- 11:30 Cape Point. Enter the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park. Ride the Flying Dutchman funicular or walk up to the lighthouse lookouts, then take the short drive to the Cape of Good Hope sign for the classic photo.
- 13:30 Lunch inside the park or on the way to Simon's Town. Tell us what you like to eat and we'll suggest a spot.
- 14:45 Boulders Beach penguins. Walk the boardwalks to see the African penguins up close. Allow about an hour.
- 15:45 Simon's Town. A stroll along the main road and the harbour.
- 16:30 Kalk Bay. The fishing harbour, antique and book shops, and an ice cream or coffee by the sea.
- 17:15 Muizenberg. A last stop at the colourful beach huts, then back to your hotel around 18:00.
That is a full day of about eight hours. With a private driver there is no fixed timetable: stay longer at the penguins, skip a stop, or add a short walk. The plan moves with you.
Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope: what to expect
People often use the two names for the same place, but they are two separate spots a few minutes apart inside the park. Cape Point is the rocky headland with the lighthouse, the funicular and the big viewpoints. The Cape of Good Hope is the beach-level point with the well-known wooden sign. Both are worth seeing, and your driver will take you to each.
Inside the park, keep an eye out for ostriches, antelope and baboons along the road. The baboons are wild: keep food out of sight and car windows closed when you park.
Boulders Beach penguins
The penguin colony at Boulders sits right next to Simon's Town. Wooden boardwalks lead to viewing decks above the beach, and you will usually see penguins nesting, swimming and waddling between the boulders. African penguins are an endangered species, so stay on the walkways and don't feed or touch them.
Practical tips
- Park fees and gate times: Cape Point and Boulders are run by SANParks and charge a conservation fee per person. Fees and gate times change by season, so check the official SANParks website before your trip. Andre confirms what is included in your quote, such as toll and park entry.
- Wind: the summer south-easter can be very strong at Cape Point. Bring a light jacket even on a sunny day.
- Chapman's Peak: check the live road status on the official Chapman's Peak Drive website. If it is closed, we take the inland road and you still see everything else.
- Comfortable shoes: the walk up to the lighthouse is steep in places.
- Start early in peak season (December to February) to beat the busiest hours.
Why do Cape Point with a private driver?
The loop is about a full day of driving on winding coastal roads, and the stops are spread out. With your own driver you are collected at your door, you don't have to find parking at busy viewpoints, and you can stop wherever the view is best. It is just your group in the car, so families with young children and older travellers can set the pace. Read how our private driver service works for booking, prices and what to expect.

Quick answers
How long is a Cape Point day trip from Cape Town?
Plan for a full day of about 8 hours from pick-up to drop-off, including stops at Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, Boulders Beach and Kalk Bay.
Can you see Cape Point and the penguins on the same day?
Yes. Boulders Beach in Simon's Town is on the way back from Cape Point, so most people see both in one day.
Is Chapman's Peak Drive always open?
No. It is a toll road that closes in bad weather or for rockfall risk. Check the official Chapman's Peak Drive website on the day; if it is closed, the driver takes the inland route.
